9th April and Giorgi Leonidze Parks in Tbilisi
What makes Tbilisi more beautiful is its green covers – years old parks. Some of them are decades old, others are created by prominent architects, who arrived in Tbilisi either from Russia or from the European countries.
Previously called Alexander’s park, now called 9th April and Giorgi Leonidze Parks are located in Tbilisi, on the opposite side of the Parliament building on the Rustaveli Avenue.
Projectof the park was created by Otto Simonson (1832-1914), Academic of the Saint Petersburg’s Imperial Academy of Arts. Otto Simonson worked in Tbilisi from 1858 to 1903. The majority of buildings in Tbilisi and in Caucasus are designed and built by him. Among buildings in Tbilisi we need to emphasize Georgian National Youth Palace, or a Governor’s Palace on the Rustaveli Avenue, near the Freedom Square. Alexander’s Garden was named as the first European style park in Tbilisi by local press. Simonson designed other parts of the park as well, like pavilions, gardener’s house, café-restaurants, fountains and new fence of Kashveti Church.
The park was renovated in 1981.
Lower part of the park is named after the Georgian writer Giorgi Leonidze.
