What Georgia can really boast about is its mountains – literally in every part of the country there are mountains, some covered with snow throughout the year. There are lots of winter and summer mountain resorts, but today let’s explore Bakuriani.

Bakuriani is a town in the district of Borjomi in the Southern part of the country. In winter, Bakuriani is a perfect destination for family vacations – there are several ski slopes, some of them are for experienced skiers andothers for the beginners. There are cafes, and lots of hotels. In summer one can walk all around Bakuriani and never get tired of the perfect views.

So why is Bakuriani such an attraction for tourists?

Firstly, the climate in Bakuriani is different. The mountain climate is especially good for children who suffer from asthma and other deceases.

The first ski station in Bakuriani was opened in 1932. Today there are several ski slopes, cable cars and other infrastructure.
The history of Bakuriani is short but very interesting. In 1816,460 families from Ukraine settled in Bakuriani. They worked in the timber industry. This timber was exported to Germany to make musical instruments.

Because of the mineral waters in Borjomi, Bakuriani became popular as well. The Russian king Alexander II gifted Borjomi to his brother Mikhail Romanoff in 1871. The Borjomi mineral water has been produced since 1890. In 1898-1901 a railway connecting Borjomi and Bakuriani was built. This helped to develop Bakuriani more quickly.

Not far from Bakuriani there is the Timotesubani Monastery which was built between the 12th and 13th centuries. The church of the Dormition is the largest one, it was built during the golden age of Georgia. The interior is covered in frescoes. Some of them were restored several years ago. The frescoes date back to around 1205-1215 years.
